@blackhistoryunfilteredd 8 Thriving Black Towns They Erased From History Books What if I told you there were entire Black towns—thriving, self-sufficient, powerful—that were deliberately erased from your history books? These weren’t small settlements. These were complete cities with their own governments, businesses, newspapers, banks, schools, and infrastructure. And most Americans have never heard their names. Number 8: Greenwood, Tulsa, Oklahoma—Black Wall Street. In 1921, this was the wealthiest Black community in America with over 10,000 residents and 600+ businesses. On May 31, 1921, a white mob dropped firebombs from airplanes and burned 35 city blocks to the ground, killing over 300 people. Number 7: Langston, Oklahoma, founded in 1890 by freed families who built the Langston City Herald newspaper, dozens of businesses, and Langston University, which still educates students today. Number 6: Freedmen’s Town, Houston—After slavery ended in 1865, freed people in Houston’s Fourth Ward paved their own streets with bricks they made by hand, built Victorian homes, and created a business district. By 1900, it was the center of Black Houston with over 400 Black-owned businesses. Number 5: Weeksville, Brooklyn, founded in 1838 as one of the first free Black communities before the Civil War. By the 1850s, over 500 residents owned property, ran businesses, and built churches and schools. Urban renewal wiped most of it away—only four houses remain today. Number 4: Mound Bayou, Mississippi, founded in 1887 by Isaiah Montgomery and Benjamin Green, formerly enslaved by Jefferson Davis’ brother. This all-Black town became completely self-governing with its own mayor, banks, cotton gins, and infrastructure. Booker T. Washington called it “the jewel of the Delta.” Number 3: Seneca Village, Manhattan, founded in 1825 with 225 Black property owners, three churches, and two schools—located exactly where Central Park is now. In 1857, New York used eminent domain to forcibly remove every family and bulldozed their homes to build a park for white elites. Number 2: Boley, Oklahoma, with over 4,000 residents by 1911. It had its own Black government, railroad station, two banks, hotels, and an opera house. Booker T. Washington visited twice and called it “the most enterprising Negro town in the United States.” Number 1: Rosewood, Florida. In January 1923, a thriving town of 200 Black landowners, farmers, and business owners was completely massacred after a false accusation by a white woman. A white mob spent an entire week murdering residents and burning every Black-owned home, church, and business to the ground. At least six officially documented deaths, but eyewitness accounts suggest 30-150 killed. Survivors fled into swamps. The town was erased from existence. No one was ever prosecuted. Florida didn’t pay reparations until 1994—71 years later. They don’t teach you this because if you knew Black people built entire self-sufficient cities, you’d question everything. If these towns were so successful, why did they have to be destroyed? This is Black History Unfiltered. Follow for more stories they tried to hide. @blackhistoryunfiltered_ Burned Alive For Resistance—Her Ashes Became A National Flower In 1730, Sarah Bassett, an elderly enslaved woman in Bermuda, was burned alive at the stake for attempting to poison her granddaughter’s enslavers. According to trial records from June 1730, Sarah gave her granddaughter Beck three types of poison—ratsbane, manchineel root, and “white toad”—with instructions to poison Thomas and Sarah Foster, the couple who enslaved Beck. Another enslaved woman, Nancy, discovered the poison and alerted the masters. During her trial, ten white citizens and her own granddaughter testified against Sarah. She maintained her innocence, telling the court “I never deserved it.” The Chief Justice declared her “moved by the Devil” and sentenced her to be burned alive. As they led her to the stake at Crow Lane, Sarah reportedly told the crowd: “No use your hurrying, folks. There’ll be no fun ’til I get there.” Legend says a purple flower—the Bermudiana, now Bermuda’s national flower—bloomed from her ashes. Exceptionally hot days in Bermuda are still called “Sally Bassett Days.” In 2008, Bermuda erected its first monument to an enslaved person—a bronze statue of Sarah Bassett with her head held high. Her resistance could not be killed. This is Black History Unfiltered. Follow for stories of resistance they tried to erase.
